Names of God YHWH, YHWH Jireh

Greetings! Thank you for joining us today! We will be doing a bit of a series on the Names of God. When we consider His names, we will learn about His attributes and how He interacts with His children. Pray the Holy Spirit will give you fresh revelation and understanding of the magnitude, the Holiness and provision of the One Who loves you. Eric

We shared in our February 11, 2026 post "For This Purpose! (Part 1)," that "God's original plan in creating man and placing Him in the Garden of Eden was that there would be perfect harmony and an unbroken relationship between Himself, humanity and creation."

Man had an intimate relationship with God in the garden, for a time. That relationship was broken through sin.

God never changes and because His heart's desire was/is for an intimate relationship with man, He set in motion His plan for the restoration of that relationship. Through Jesus Christ, that relationship is being restored.

God already knows us intimately. He created us in our mother's womb and is aware of our presence constantly. (Psalm 139). However, His desire is that we would also know Him intimately.

How can we humans get to know God intimately?

The answer to that question is multi-faceted. Accepting the gift of salvation which was given to us through the shed blood of Christ is paramount. When we become His children, or accept Christ as our Savior, God sends the Holy Spirit to reside in us. The Holy Spirit guides, convicts, teaches, helps, comforts, reveals truth, strengthens and empowers us.

God has graciously given us His Word, which reveals Who He is. He has also given believers personal access to Himself through prayer. His Word lets us know that believers may enter His throne room with confidence. (Hebrews 10:19).

What we are going to focus on in the next few weeks is how God reveals Himself to us through His names which are disclosed in the Scriptures.

The names of God referenced to us in the Scripture are important to our knowing Him and His attributes. To know Him intimately, we need to know Who He is and how He relates to us as His creation.

"YHWH (Yahweh) is recognized as the primary covenant name for God in Hebrew Scriptures. It carries a connotation of "I AM" encompassing God's eternal existence, sovereignty and self-sufficiency." (Bible Hub Topical Bible).

Ancient Hebrew was written with no vowels. "The four Hebrew letters Yod, He, Waw, and He (YHWH) is called the Tetragrammation. YHWH expresses God's timeless unmatched existence. It is derived from a form of the Hebrew verb 'to be' which is the same meaning as 'I AM'; 'He Exists'; or 'He causes to be.'“ (bibletools.org).

When God called Moses to go to Pharaoh to bring the children of Israel out of Egypt, Moses asked the Lord what name he should tell the Israelites sent him. In Exodus 3:14, we read God's answer, "God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.' " 'I AM WHO I AM' identified the Lord to the Israelites. He is the unchanging One Who is the source of all being.

In Isaiah 43:10c and 11, we read, "Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me. 11 I, even I, am the LORD, and apart from me there is no savior."

In Hebrew Scriptures, YHWH often appears as upper case "LORD." (Bible Hub).

YHWH is presented as absolutely holy, set apart from all impurity (Leviticus 19:2). "The Jews considered YHWH too sacred to speak. They stopped pronouncing it after the days of Ezra and Nehemiah. It was considered unlawful and blasphemous to vocalize it." (Bible Hub Topical Bible).

I believe most of us today have lost sight of the holiness of God. He calls believers 'friends.' However, His absolute holiness has not changed. He is worthy of all praise and adoration.

"In medieval times, when vowel points were added, the names for YHWH were Jehovah and Adonai, which were used rather than attempt to pronounce the sacred name. Jewish tradition then, used the name 'Adonai' (Lord) or 'HaShem' (The Name) instead of pronouncing the four letters. The patriarchs used the phrase 'God Almighty' - 'El Shaddai' when talking about the Lord. Scholars favored using 'Yahweh' after vowel points were added. "Yahweh" is a revelation of God's eternal character, faithfulness and unparalleled supremacy. It is seen thousands of times in the Old Testament." (Bible Hub Topical Bible).

In a side note, "The first of the Dead Sea Scrolls, in which The Tetragrammation in Hebrew characters were preserved, were found in 1947. Nine hundred fifty manuscripts dated 3rd Century BC to the 1st Century AD were found over a ten year period of time." (Bible Hub Topical Bible).

When Moses went to Mount Sinai to meet with the Lord to receive the Tablets, the Lord Himself expounded many of His attributes to Moses. We find those attributes in Exodus 34: 5-8 which reads, "Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD. 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, "The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation." 8 Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped."

The Lord (YHWH) again reveals His eternal existence in Revelation 1:17,18 (Amplified Bible), "When I saw Him, I fell at His feet as though dead. And He placed His right hand on me and said, "Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last [absolute Deity, the Son of God], 18 and the Ever-living One [living in and beyond all time and space]. I died, but see, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of [absolute control and victory over] death and of Hades (the realm of the dead)."

Building on this foundation, I want to explore seven compound names of God over the next few weeks - all which begin with YHWH or Jehovah. There are more, however, for now, we will stick with the seven.

The first of these names of God which we will look at is: YHWH (Jehovah) Jireh meaning: "The Lord will Provide." The Hebrew word translated 'provide' is raah which literally means "to see." Because 'to see' also means "to see to it," Abraham named Mount Moriah (where YHWH provided the ram to be sacrificed instead of Isaac.), "The Lord Will Provide or Jehovah Jireh," (Genesis 22:14).

The verb thus bridges sight and supply promising that God foresees and furnishes all that covenant life requires. Deuteronomy 11:12 reveals that the eyes of the Lord our God are always on the land. He has personal and intimate involvement with the land and its people.

God neither slumbers not sleeps. He kept a perpetual watchfulness over His creation. (Psalm 121:4). "Certainly, the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear Him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love." (Psalm 33:18).

When we think of provision, we tend to think of the material or physical things we need. However, in the Lord's provision, He includes everything we need. This includes the material, spiritual, emotional and relational needs which we might encounter. This truth is revealed in Philippians 4:19, "And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus." "And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all you need, you will abound in every good work." (2 Corinthians 9:8).

We are going to look at some of the supernatural provision Jehovah Jireh made for the Israelites to meet their needs during their wilderness journey.

1). He parted the Red Sea when they were trapped and the Egyptian army was about to overtake them. (Exodus 14:21-29).

2). Their clothes and shoes did not wear out! (Deuteronomy 29:5).

3). He provided bread. (Exodus 16:4).

4). Jehovah Jireh provided meat. (Numbers 11:31).

5). He provided water from a rock. (Exodus 17:6).

6). By a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, He provided guidance and protection. (Exodus 13:21.

What about us (believers)?

1). Jehovah Jireh provides us with wisdom. (James 1:5).

2). Our hunger and thirst for righteousness with be filled. (Matthew 5:16).

3). He gave His Word to train us. (2 Timothy 3:15-17).

4). When we face temptation, He provides the way of escape. (1 Corinthians 10:13).

5). He provides food and clothing. (Matthew 6:25-33).

6). He gave us His Holy Spirit to live inside us! (John 7:37-39).

7). We have His promise that if we seek Him - we will not lack. (Psalm 34:10).

8). He provides His unmerited favor and divine assistance to abound is us. (2 Corinthians 9:8).

9). When there was no way, He provided Himself to pay the penalty for our sins so that we are able to be in right relationship with Him and have the wondrous gift of eternal life! (John 3:16).

God's provision is comprehensive, all inclusive, and with no limitations!

True faith is always modest. Strong faith completely empties itself and entirely depends upon the all sufficient provision of God.

It is guaranteed that we all will be tried and tested but, in our most desperate need, God will ‘see’ us and ‘see to’ our deliverance. Realize, there will be times when the storm rages, and He may not stop the storm. However, His provision might just be, His bringing us through the storm.

Another thing we really need to understand is that God doesn't need our help when it comes to His provision. We can't control when our hearts might be broken, or trying, on our own, to master sin. The Word tells us that apart from Him, we are nothing and can do nothing!

Hallelujah though! His work is sufficient! He gave all He had, His Son! Christ did not die in vain!

"Jehovah Jireh, The Lord, has provided an effectual redemption for all those who put their trust in Him." (Bible Hub Study Bible).

"Where will He provide? In the place of our trial. Where you cannot see, the Lord will see you and see to your needs; for His eyes are upon the righteous and His ears are open to their cry." (Charles Spurgeon).

"The name Jehovah Jireh becomes a guiding truth for life's trials. He not only grants what is needed, He intimately knows every situation we encounter. We must learn to trust God's timing and methods of provision. Will we live in fear or believe confidently that He "SEES" and will SEE To" every need? (Bible Hub Topical Lexicon).

Unless noted otherwise all Scripture is taken from the New International Version)
